SIGNA

Leon and the Hand's Song

Double string Quartet

Bombyx

SIGNA is the meeting of two musicians : Jacques Rémus, sound sculptor, and Rolf Sudmann, thereminist.

The hands of the musicians twirl, tighten, fidget, freeze, around astonishing instruments which release then unimagined stamps, impalpable notes. Movements of the hands are filmed and projected on side screens for the public.

SIGNA is a strange instrumental duo exploring the relations between gesture, sound and technology.

The Theremin...

The theremin was invented in 1919 by a Russian physicist named Leon Theremin. Besides looking like no other instrument, the theremin is unique in that it is played without being touched. Two antennas protrude from the theremin - one controlling pitch, and the other controlling volume. As a hand approaches the vertical antenna, the pitch gets higher. Approaching the horizontal antenna makes the volume softer. Because there is no physical contact with the instrument, playing the theremin requires precise skill and perfect pitch.

SIGNA was show for the first time to the Stelzenfestspiele festival in Stelzen, Germany, and for the Celebration of the Liberation in Gentilly, in 2003.
